Blog #1!

Hello world…

This is the first blog I’ve ever written which will be visible outside of a company I’ve worked for. It’s the first time I’ve gone out on my own. I’ve never even written a personal blog.

I hope that what I’ve learned in data and analytics since 2007 will be interesting to others and now is the time to find out!

So what will my blog be about? Primarily, it will be about Power BI adoption. I’ve been involved in taking the organisation I work for from the start of a Power BI journey to a fairly mature and thriving community of users all helping each other be successful with data. However, a lot of what I write will be transferrable to other technologies and certainly transferrable across industries.

I have a long background in data governance, so there is no doubt that this experience will influence what I write.

Why now? Learning Power BI has been like having a fire lit underneath me. I’ve enjoyed helping people in my organisation do things they never expected to do without IT using Power BI. The size of the Power BI community and the value that so many people try to bring to others without immediate reward has been a big inspiration to me. I think I’ve learned some valuable lessons and I want to share them. I listened just yesterday to Kasper De Jonge’s podcast (Kasper on BI) with Brent Ozar and Brent inspired me to “do it today”. Brent’s getting things done philosophy and goal setting mentality has taken me from idea to implementation, so my first thank you will be to Brent and Kasper.

My second thank you will be to Asgeir Gunnarsson – (see his blog here). Asgeir taught me to use Power BI (he lit the fire!) and has been a constant companion in my journey with the tool.

Hope you find value in these posts – feel free to add views and comments.
